The Surgical Pathology Consultation Service at City of Hope combines an extensive array of diagnostic expertise into a single customer-focused consultation program. An integrated report with the diagnosis, phenotype and genotype, if required, is provided for each case. Under the direction of Sophia Apple, M.D. (breast and gynecological pathology, and cytopathology), our team of surgical pathologists provides accurate and timely support during the initial stage of diagnosis, as well as during ongoing disease management.
With subspecialty expertise, Peiguo Chu, M.D., Ph.D. (general surgical pathology, gastrointestinal pathology and immunohistochemistry), Sue Chang, M.D. (cytopathology), Massimo D’Apuzzo, M.D., Ph.D. (neuropathology), Yu Liang, M.D., Ph.D. (bone and soft tissue pathology), Christiane Querfeld, M.D., Ph.D. (dermatopathology), Daniel Schmolze, M.D. (breast pathology), Sharon Wilczynski, M.D., Ph.D. (gynecological pathology, soft tissue pathology and cytopathology) and Huiqing Wu, M.D. (genitourinary pathology) consult on over 10,000 surgical pathology cases annually. Genetic testing services are provided by the City of Hope Cytogenetics Laboratory under the direction of Joyce Murata-Collins, Ph.D. and Abbas Padeganeh, Ph.D. Molecular diagnostics testing services are provided by the City of Hope Clinical Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory under the direction of Michelle Afkhami, M.D., and Milhan Telatar, Ph.D.

Immunohistochemistry — A sophisticated, automated laboratory with a menu of over 150 stains which are completed within 24 hours.
Molecular Diagnostics — A state-of-the-art molecular laboratory which performs over 15,000 procedures each year. The staff, has extensive experience in molecular diagnostic testing.
Cancer Cytogenetics — The Cytogenetics Laboratory performs over 8,000 diagnostic cytogenetic and FISH procedures each year. Joyce Murata-Collins, Ph.D., and Abbas Padeganeh, Ph.D., provide in-depth expertise in cancer-related genetic abnormalities.
