The Eugene and Ruth Roberts Summer Student Academy at City of Hope turned 54 this year. Marking the occasion, the academy announced a new scholarship in honor of longtime director, Paul Salvaterra, Ph.D.

Paul Salvaterra"I love seeing these kids doing science," says Paul Salvaterra of the Eugene and Ruth Roberts Summer Student Academy.

Salvaterra, a professor in City of Hope's Department of Neurosciences, has led the summer student academy for nearly four decades, helping thousands of students participate in laboratory research projects at City of Hope.

“I stay involved with the academy because I love seeing these kids doing science,” Salvaterra said. “To be honest, I’m a little embarrassed by the attention, but it’s a real honor to receive this recognition.”

His own work has included studies designed to determine the neuronal cellular fate and specific neurotransmitter phenotypes of cells in the nervous system. Another project is meant to help define genetic pathways involved in Alzheimer’s disease.

To apply for the scholarship, students in the program wrote essays about scientists they most admire. The winner was selected by a panel of judges from the academy.

Allison Sheu, a student at St. Ignatius College Preparatory in San Francisco, was named the inaugural Paul Salvaterra Scholar during the annual poster session in Cooper Auditorium on July 30. Her winning essay highlighted the work of marine biologist Rachel Carson, who was a pioneer of the environmental movement.

The Eugene and Ruth Roberts Summer Student Academy provides high school and university students hands-on research experience. Summer students design and work on their own research projects in areas of their specific interests. City of Hope faculty members act as mentors to guide the students and encourage their independent thought and exploration.
