Associate Clinical Professor, Department, Hematology & Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation
Thai Cao, M.D., is a board-certified hematologist with subspecialty training in stem cell transplantation and is a member of the City of Hope/Kaiser Bone Marrow Transplantation Team.
Originally from Vietnam, Cao immigrated to the United States when he was 5years old. He grew up in Kansas, where he stayed for medical school and his internship and residency. For his fellowship, he journeyed to San Francisco, where he trained in hematology and bone marrow transplantation.
He finished his training in 2004 and joined the faculty of the Blood and Bone Marrow Transplant Program at the University of Utah, where he worked for nine years. During that time, he was involved in translational and clinical research.
Cao says that his subspecialty requires that he work extremely closely with an integrated team. That team includes not only other physicians, but nurses, laboratory personnel, social workers and countless others. With his teammates, he cares for patients with potentially life-threatening diseases, including many types of cancer.
Bone marrow and stem cell transplants require not only medical expertise, Cao says, but also a deep understanding of the emotional state of his patients. He is proud and privileged to provide the best and most advanced care for patients and their families.
When he’s not working, he says his kids keep him very busy. He takes his bike out to various trails in Southern California, and loves the area's rich ecological and social diversity.
