City of Hope's National Insurance Industry Council

National Insurance Industry Council
An Industry Committed to Cures

A group of key industry executives, motivated by a commitment to innovative medical research, quality patient care and City of Hope’s guiding humanitarian principals, founded City of Hope’s National Insurance Industry Council (NIIC) in 1978.  They joined the now more than twenty industry groups at City of Hope that loyally support City of Hope’s quest for cures.

Having raised some $20 million over their 35 year history, the dedicated volunteers of the NIIC are committed to saving the lives of cancer and diabetes patients while also bringing hope to loved ones and caregivers.  As an industry dedicated to protecting the assets and lives of others, the insurance industry formed a natural and inspiring partnership with City of Hope.

The Spirit of Life Award dinner is the center of the NIIC annual fundraising initiative and has a long tradition having first honored Richard DeRosa of Mission Insurance Group back in 1979.  Today, NIIC gatherings across the country include Hoops for Hope in 5 Cities (Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, Des Moines and Phoenix) and the Strike Out Cancer Bowling Events in Chicago, Atlanta and now Tampa provide a friendly and festive environment for competitors and colleagues to network, have fun and support a great cause.

The NIIC comprises representatives of the most prominent life, property and casualty companies, law firms, brokers, accounting firms, reinsurers, executive placement firms and actuaries in the insurance industry. With active Midwest, Greater Phoenix and Atlanta Committees and council members from across the U.S., the NIIC spans the country, as does the impact of City of Hope’s research, patient care protocols and educational outreach.

City of Hope undertakes its work with a profound sense of responsibility and unwavering commitment. This means not only pioneering new ways to end disease but collaborating with institutions across the country and around the world to ensure treatments reach patients more quickly. Great progress requires great partnership. Together, with the National Insurance Industry Council, we are building a world where cancer, diabetes and other diseases no longer claim the lives of those we love.

The Power of Hope
City of Hope’s mission is to cure and prevent cancer, diabetes and other life-threatening diseases.

Groundbreaking discoveries at City of Hope already have led to treatments that save lives worldwide. City of Hope’s dedication to compassion is spelled out in its credo: “There is no profit in curing the body if, in the process, we destroy the soul.”

With the help of loyal industry volunteers, today City of Hope is poised to make progress like never before.

Board of Directors

About the NIIC Board of Directors

Due to the tremendous growth of the National Insurance Industry Council campaign for the past 35 years, a new, smaller National Insurance Council Board leadership structure has been established to more efficiently and effectively manage the long term health of the insurance industry fundraising effort.

These leaders in the insurance community come together to support the region committees and view these as the strength and future of the NIIC.  The council’s other roles are the selecting of future honorees and recruiting new board members. Initially, the National Insurance Industry Council Board will include current Advisory and Executive Committee members, the Spirit of Life Committee Chair and Regional Committee Chairs.  Additional members may be added in the future as deemed appropriate by the Board.

West Coast Committee

About The West Coast Committe
The West Coast Committee was started in 2012 when the new Board and Committee structure took place.  Although the committee is new, many of the existing members have been supporting City of Hope for years and some for decades under the prior structure.  The West Coast Committee of the National Insurance Industry Council’s mission is to support City of Hope’s innovative research and treatment programs while having fun and creating a networking base that provides opportunities for industry executives to meet one another and build an industry community in the West Coast.

The Committee raises funds for City of Hope pioneering research in cancer, diabetes and HIV/AIDS.  In addition, the Committee has also sponsored several blood drives in the downtown area and plays host each year to the annual Dinner (at the Langham Hotel in Pasadena) and Tour (on Campus) in early spring that kicks off the year’s campaign for NIIC’s Honoree.

The Committee has actively recruited professionals in all industry related disciplines, as well as those that support the industry as clients, vendors and service providers.
