As a cancer survivor, Ana Chu, M.D., knows firsthand the value of the empathetic, whole-person care City of Hope is known for. Her personal journey, combined with over three decades of experience in anesthesiology and pain management, gives her a unique perspective as a researcher and cancer expert.
A graduate of the University of California Los Angeles Geffen School of Medicine, Dr. Chu completed her internal medicine residency at Montefiore Medical Center. After taking an interest in anesthesia, she completed a second residency, followed by an advanced subspecialty training fellowship at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. “I was fascinated by the ability to mitigate pain, as well as the pharmacologic aspects of pain control and its effects on the mind,” she says.
Conversant in English, Spanish and some Chinese, Dr. Chu is board certified in anesthesia and internal medicine and holds diplomate certification in pain management from the American Board of Pain Medicine. She devotes much of her free time serving her community, with a special interest in supporting young scientists at the high school, college and graduate levels.
