Previously working as a contract physician, Dr. Suji Mathew joined City of Hope as a full-time Infectious Disease Physician in November 2019. Board certified in infectious disease and internal medicine, Dr. Mathew is dedicated to antibiotic stewardship, infection prevention and the accurate diagnosis and treatment of infections. “My ultimate goal is to help, to heal and to serve patients at City of Hope,” she says.
At the Atlanta hospital, Dr. Mathew works closely with care teams and patients needing expertise in either diagnosing or managing infectious diseases. City of Hope Atlanta has several rapid diagnostic tests that quickly identify infectious pathogens, which helps in streamlining the treatment process.
“In my role, I collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams for the rapid diagnostic testing of infections, pathogens or resistance genes,” says Dr. Mathew. “I strive to quickly identify infection and continuously monitor treatment to improve outcomes.”
Dr. Mathew received a medical degree with distinction in biochemistry at Topiwala National Medical College in Bombay, India. She received a Master of Science in pharmacology from the University of Minnesota in Duluth, Minnesota, then completed an internal medicine residency at Hurley Medical Center/Michigan State University in Flint, Michigan before completing an infectious disease fellowship at University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and Dallas Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Dallas, Texas.
Dr. Mathew has extensive experience spearheading and consulting for infectious control programs at many hospitals. She is the physician lead for the local antibiotic stewardship program and is proud that City of Hope Atlanta has been conferred the “Gold Status” on the Georgia Honor Roll for stewardship programs. She is an active member of several professional organizations, including the International Antiviral Society, Infectious Diseases Society of America and Society of Healthcare Epidemiology of America.
In addition to her work, Dr. Mathew is passionate about traveling, karaoke, yoga and volunteering. She also enjoys spending quality time with her husband and two children.
