Initiative aims to unleash the power of innovation to fight cancer as part of White House Cancer Moonshot

LOS ANGELES — City of Hope, one of the largest cancer research and treatment organizations in the United States, announced today that it is joining other leading health organizations as a founding member of CancerX, a new effort to support better cancer care and research through a public-private partnership. CancerX is designed to boost innovation in the fight against cancer as part of the White House’s reignited national Cancer Moonshot.
CancerX was recently announced by President Joe Biden and Dr. Jill Biden at the one-year anniversary of the Cancer Moonshot, with a national goal to cut the death rate from cancer by at least 50% over the next 25 years and to improve the experience of people and their families living with cancer. The new public-private partnership unites the diverse stakeholders and innovators necessary to unleash the power of digital innovation to design and create a future that’s free of the burden of cancer.
“There is a gap between the cancer innovation taking place and the people who can actually access these breakthroughs. City of Hope is committed to working to close that gap by finding solutions and innovations that help make leading-edge research, treatment and care accessible to more patients and communities,” said Harlan Levine, M.D., president of health innovation and policy at City of Hope. “As a founding member of CancerX, City of Hope is eager to provide our perspective to help inform what innovations are needed and how best to approach challenges in the fight against cancer.”
CancerX is co-hosted by Moffitt Cancer Center and the Digital Medicine Society (DiMe), alongside the Office for the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology and Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health. The initiative is focused on the development of digital solutions to improve cancer patient care, software technology to support community organizations and new digital platforms to support post-treatment care.
City of Hope joins a broad group of organizations that will drive the success of CancerX, which provides a structure for organizations whose missions are aligned with the Cancer Moonshot goals to rapidly advance innovative solutions for success at scale. Through a multipronged approach focused on commoditizing best practices and aligning incentives, coordinating access to research, mentorship, resources and other collaborative opportunities, and demonstrating success in practice to drive broad adoption, this public-private partnership aims to reduce the incidence and burden of cancer for all people.

Work on CancerX’s inaugural project, “Advancing Digital Innovation to Improve Equity and Reduce Financial Toxicity in Cancer Care and Research,” is already underway to assess, quantify and enhance the impact of digital solutions on cancer care cost, access and outcomes dimensions.
