Unparalleled Radiation
Oncology Expertise
An Adaptive Radiotherapy Center of Excellence, we’re also a recognized ASTRO Accreditation Program for Excellence (APEx) program. An independent radiation oncology practice accreditation program, APEx is based on a comprehensive set of sixteen standards of radiation oncology practice, organized around five pillars of patient care.
The process of making necessary adjustments in real-time (while the patient is on the treatment table) or between radiation therapy sessions to optimize radiation delivery to the tumor and minimize radiation to sensitive normal tissue and organs. This is often necessary when there is significant day-to-day variation in tumor position and size or when significant motion day-to-day of the surrounding normal tissue (stomach, small bowel, rectum, trachea, esophagus, etc.). This personalized approach ensures precise tumor targeting and allows for the optimization of treatment effectiveness while reducing side effects.
- CT-Based Adaptive Radiation Therapy uses advanced on-board CT imaging incorporated into the linear accelerator for daily adjustments to the treatment plan. The Ethos technology is the only current technology that allows for real-time CT-based adaptive radiation therapy.
- MRI-Based Adaptive Radiation Therapy, on the other hand, utilizes MRI to visualize soft tissues and organs at risk, allowing for more accurate target delineation and real-time adjustment of the tumor and normal tissue as well as real-time tracking of the tumor while the radiation therapy is being delivered.
Having both CT-based and MR-based adaptive radiation therapy under one department is unique, positioning our radiation oncologists to personalize selection of the best technology to treat a patient’s individual case while offering disease specific-expertise.
- 6 degree couch
- Flexibility of treatment
TrueBeam radiotherapy system provides a variety of treatment techniques, such as respiration synchronized MV/kV radiographs, 4D CBCT, Iterative CBCT, triggered-imaging, to address a broad range of cancer cases. Technology integration enables clinicians to treat a wider array of cancer cases using a diverse range of radiation therapies.
- Hypersight clear imaging
- CT guided adaptive radiation therapy
- AI enabled
Redefining cancer care through an Adaptive Intelligence™ solution that predicts anatomy and optimizes radiation doses accordingly. Integrates iterative CBCT and multi-modality diagnostic quality images on the treatment console at the point of treatment. By providing the most current view of the patient’s anatomy in exquisite detail, Ethos gives clinicians confidence to adapt plans based on high quality imaging.
- MRI guided
- MR adaptive radiation therapy
- Real-time soft tissue tracking
- Personalize indication based on individual patient
Merges two technologies — an MRI scanner to precisely locate and a state-of-the-art linear accelerator for treatment delivery. This dual-action system allows for near real-time, on-table adaptive radiation therapy to adjust the radiation beams based on the daily anatomy. Ultra-fast treatment planning supports our physicians ability to optimize and customize advanced therapy techniques.
Why Choose City of Hope
Uniquely Integrated Approach
Unlike traditional cancer programs that often involve fragmented and delayed care, radiation oncology
is part of a coordinated team alongside surgery, medical oncology, genetics, and supportive care.
At City of Hope Orange County, patients are seen by dedicated, specialty specific experts in disease and technology: Breast, Lung, GI, GU, GynOnc and in consideration of Brachytherapy, Adaptive RT, IMRT, SBRT, etc. The world-class team of clinicians and scientists all under one roof at City of Hope Orange County provides:
- Real-time collaboration
- Clearer treatment plan
- Improved outcomes
- Reduced delays and stress
IMRT is an advanced mode of radiotherapy to deliver precise radiation doses to a tumor. Higher radiation doses are focused on a tumor while minimizing the surrounding normal critical structures. MRT also treats much larger fields than SBRT.
- High-precision radiotherapy
- Generally 5 – 35 treatments
- Malignant tumors
- Spares surrounding tissue
SBRT focuses on delivering high-dose radiation onto a small area of the body. SBRT may be recommended to treat cancers that are too high-risk for surgeries.
- High-dose radiotherapy
- Generally 5 or fewer treatments
- High-risk tumors
- Spares surrounding tissue
Brachytherapy, specifically HDR, uses catheters inserted to deliver high doses of radiation from within the tumor versus external beam radiation. This treatment can be more effective in treating some cancers while minimizing the duration of exposure for nearby normal tissues.
- Internal high-dose radiation
- Shorter treatment times
- Reduces side effects
Adaptive radiotherapy on Ethos®, enabling better confidence for seeing tumors and neighboring healthy tissue especially in the chest, abdomen, and pelvis. Benefits include: Increase sparing of healthy tissue; better image quality for specific patient populations; calculation of dose directly on the image; and less time on the couch.
- Improved spatial and contrast resolution
- Metal artifact reduction algorithm
- Reduction in motion-related artifacts
- Minimizes patient discomfort and anxiety
This technology significantly improves the capturing of the tumor’s location and its movement within the body. By capturing both location and movement, our treatment team can better plan a regimen and more precisely programming the radiation beams.
- Enhances cancer treatments
- Accounts for tumor or organ motion
