Phoenix Code Acute Leukemia Program
Acute leukemia is a potentially deadly type of blood cancer that can progress quickly. Any patient who checks into an emergency room (ER) or urgent care clinic with signs of acute leukemia – which often include flu-like symptoms – should be evaluated as soon as possible by an oncologist and transferred to a hospital that specializes in cancer if a diagnosis is confirmed. That is why City of Hope® Cancer Center Phoenix developed the Code Acute Leukemia Program, designed to ensure that acute leukemia patients are referred quickly and smoothly to a City of Hope blood cancer specialist.
What Is Arizona’s Code Acute Leukemia Program?
City of Hope’s Code Acute Leukemia Program was founded in 2018 at our flagship, National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center in Southern California. The program has helped hundreds of patients nationwide receive the specialized, expedited care they need for acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL).
The City of Hope Phoenix Acute Leukemia Transfer Process
When a patient is referred from an ER, urgent care or their primary care provider using our Code Acute Leukemia Program, they are transferred directly to our Blood Cancer Center in Goodyear, Arizona — the only program in the West Valley accredited by the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT) for excellence in stem cell transplantation.
Referring and receiving physicians are involved from start to finish, ensuring that patients are transferred and receive care in a timely manner. The process begins with a single phone call to a line that also connects referring physicians directly to our patient’s City of Hope care team to answer questions related to transfer, clinical care or insurance concerns.
