When it comes to detecting lung cancer, speed matters. Early detection is key to more treatment options and improved survival outcomes.
In 2023, only 3.8% of Georgia’s high-risk patients were screened for lung cancer, according to the American Lung Association. At City of Hope® Cancer Center Atlanta, we focus on closing the gap through our Lung Cancer Screening and Diagnostic Services Program.
How Is Our Atlanta Lung Screening Program Different?
Experience the City of Hope difference — speed to care, rapid results and disease-specific experts.
Our Atlanta Lung Screening and Diagnostic Services Program is designed for same-day screening, rapid turnaround of results to you and your referring doctor, and access to physicians and other clinicians singularly focused on comprehensive lung cancer care.
Quality and Safety Recognition
Delivering high-quality, safe care is our priority. As a designated American College of Radiology® (ACR) Lung Cancer Screening Center™, City of Hope Atlanta has been recognized for meeting the highest standards of medical imaging quality and safety following rigorous review of protocols by the ACR Lung Cancer Screening Committee.
Low-Dose Computed Tomography
The cornerstone of our imaging services is low-dose computed tomography (LDCT), currently the only screening test recommended by the United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) for patients with a high risk for developing lung cancer. LDCT advantages include:
- Images produced by LDCT are more detailed and better at detecting early-stage lung cancer than a chest X-ray alone.
- Research shows that screening for lung cancer with LDCT reduces the risk of dying from lung cancer in the high-risk population.
- LDCT scans are painless and quick, often taking just a few minutes, and use much less radiation than a regular CT scan.
Screening Eligibility
The USPSTF recommends lung cancer screening for individuals who:
- Are between the ages of 50 to 80
- Currently smoke or quit smoking within the past 15 years
- Have a 20-pack-year history of smoking*
Under the USPSTF guidelines, women, Black and Latino individuals are considered at higher risk.
* A pack year is an average of one pack of cigarettes a day for one year. If you smoked a pack of cigarettes a day for 20 years, for example, you have a 20-pack-year history.
Smoking and Lung Cancer
Cigarette smoking is the leading risk factor for cancer. It’s also the leading cause of the disease and linked to 80% of all lung cancer deaths.
Other causes of the disease include exposure to secondhand smoke or other substances and pollutants — radon, asbestos and toxic gasses, for example.
