About Dr. Chen

Raised by his grandparents, Dr. Chen initially wanted to be a geriatrician. His passion for health care was solidified by his volunteer work as a biology undergraduate at Washington University in St. Louis, where he volunteered at the school of medicine. During rotations in medical school at State University of New York (SUNY) at Buffalo, he became fascinated by the ever-changing science of oncology and decided to pursue a career in hematology and oncology.

Triple board-certified in hematology, medical oncology and internal medicine, Dr. Chen earned both a medical degree and a Master of Business Administration degree from SUNY at Buffalo before starting an internal medicine residency at the University of Arizona in Tucson, where he was selected chief resident. He followed that experience with a hematology oncology fellowship at the same organization and was selected chief fellow. After graduating from training in 2017, Dr. Chen began his career as a general hematologist and oncologist at a community practice in Tucson, where he was the medical director before to joining City of Hope in 2023.

“The patient-focused cancer care approach that’s practiced at City of Hope really resonated with me,” he said. “When an opportunity arose to move to Phoenix to join the Gilbert outpatient location and be closer to family, I couldn’t have been more thrilled.”

In addition to clinical care and community practice engagement, Dr. Chen has a deep background in cancer research. He has authored a number of publications on hematology throughout his career and aims to offer new, state-of-the-art treatments in clinical trials to patients whenever appropriate.

Dr. Chen welcomes the opportunity to collaborate with other physicians through referrals and emerging lines of research to help improve patient outcomes, advance treatment methodologies and address cases related to hematology and general medical oncology.
