AzBusiness’ list of top physicians is created based on input from the state’s top health care organizations, medical industry leaders and doctors’ professional ratings and represents the most skilled, innovative and influential doctors in Arizona. This is also not Dr. Cortas’ first recognition for her work serving Arizonans: She’s been included six times in Phoenix Magazine’s annual “top doctors” lists.

Triple board-certified in internal medicine, hematology and clinical oncology, Dr. Cortas serves patients at the City of Hope® Cancer Care Scottsdale location. While she treats a wide range of cancers and conditions, she has a particular focus on providing care for patients diagnosed with breast cancer. Her other areas of clinical expertise include thoracic and gastrointestinal cancers, as well as both benign and malignant hematologic conditions.

As a clinician, Dr. Cortas is committed to leveraging precision medicine approaches whenever possible, allowing her to tailor each patient’s care plan to their tumor’s specific genetic profile. Tapping into City of Hope’s research efforts, Dr. Cortas also offers her patients access to leading-edge protocols and identifies potential clinical trials that may suit their specific needs. She has served as principal investigator on multiple studies advancing breast and lung cancer therapies and addressing the side effects of treatment.

“It's an honor to be included in AzBusiness’ list of Arizona’s best doctors and to represent the compassionate, comprehensive care we’re dedicated to at City of Hope Phoenix,” Dr. Cortas said. “Our team is dedicated to enhancing quality of life for patients affected by cancer, providing multidisciplinary care from diagnosis through to survivorship and offering supportive care options for both patients and their caregivers.”

Dr. Cortas has served patients in the Phoenix area for many years. She was also an Assistant professor in hematology and oncology at the Cleveland Veterans Affairs Medical Center and Case Western University , where she served as director of the multidisciplinary lung cancer program and the inpatient oncology unit. Dr. Cortas earned her medical degree from the American University of Beirut in Lebanon before completing an internal medicine residency and a fellowship in hematology and oncology at the University Hospitals of Cleveland and Case Western Reserve University. During her fellowship, she was part of a research team investigating lung cancer’s molecular mechanisms.

“Being able to provide expert medical care backed by both groundbreaking research efforts and a person-centered approach to oncology is our strength at City of Hope,” Dr. Cortas said. “It is a privilege to work with patients and guide them through some of the most difficult times they may face.”

City of Hope brings greater access to leading-edge care, clinical trials and multidisciplinary cancer experts at locations in Goodyear, Gilbert, North Phoenix and Scottsdale. By collaborating with the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen), which is based in Phoenix and is part of City Hope, City of Hope’s Arizona locations are able to accelerate the speed with which research reaches patients, moving scientific discoveries from the lab to patients’ bedsides with lifesaving speed.
