Leadership Perspective December 2023

Dear Friends,

There’s something about getting behind City of Hope’s lifesaving efforts that lights a fire in people.

Phil Burden experienced this when he asked his circle of friends and colleagues to contribute to his 120-mile walk for City of Hope research. As you can read in our story, he was overwhelmed by the response.  "I was so pumped up by the support I got that I walked 13.5 miles in the first morning,” he said. “I was walking on air."

Though Phil himself is coping with a diagnosis, it didn’t stop him from acting, his supporters at his side -- supporters who believe in Phil and believe that we can, indeed, beat cancer.

When donors and volunteers join our mission, incredible things happen--research speeds up, more people are helped, faster.  The chance to build a future free of cancer and diabetes inspires people to act.  Seeing people transformed by their commitment and generosity is one of the best parts of my job.

Generosity and community spirit were on full display across our City of Hope sites last month as we relaunched our employee giving program.  I have the privilege of witnessing the dedication of our staff every day; when these same people go a step further to commit their financial resources to our mission it’s especially uplifting to me, and I hope to all of you—it’s the ultimate expression of confidence in our work.

Our philanthropic community is comprised of supporters from all walks of life and circumstances.  Regardless of the path that has brought you to our mission, we’re thrilled to have you with us.  Every friend, employee, colleague and volunteer who raises their hand is making a difference. Together, we are a growing philanthropic movement united by a singular purpose: the defeat of cancer and diabetes.

We have much to celebrate this holiday season, including Phil’s resilience and the warmth of a donor community propelling cures and care forward for people everywhere. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for believing in us, investing in us and helping turn hope into reality for patients and families everywhere.
