Phoenix High-Risk Breast Cancer Program
Female breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in the United States, with about 300,000 new cases diagnosed every year. But not all women carry the same risk for the disease.
At City of Hope® Cancer Center Phoenix, our High-Risk Breast Cancer Program offers services for women who know they are at risk for developing breast cancer. If you’re unaware of your level of risk or are concerned about your likelihood of developing breast cancer, the experts at City of Hope offer screening, imaging and testing services designed to help assess the factors that may contribute to your risk.
What Increases the Risk of Breast Cancer?
Many factors are known to contribute to an increased risk of breast cancer.
Some breast cancer risk factors are out of your control, including:
- Family history of cancer, especially breast and ovarian cancers
- Inherited mutations in BRCA1, BRCA2, PTEN and/or TP53 genes
- Early or late menopause
- Abnormalities in breast tissue
- Age
Other risk factors are associated with previous or current medical conditions or your reproductive history. They include:
- Radiation therapy before the age of 30
- Use of hormone replacement therapy
- Timing of prior pregnancies
- History of breastfeeding
- Obesity
Many risk factors are linked to lifestyle choices that are within your control, some of which may contribute to obesity, including:
- Tobacco use
- Alcohol use or abuse
- Poor diet
- Sedentary lifestyle
Our Phoenix breast cancer experts can help you identify lifestyle decisions and other steps you may need to take to reduce and monitor your risk.
