Phoenix Stem Cell Transplant Program

City of Hope® is a pioneer in the treatment of blood cancers and a leader in hematopoietic stem cell transplants (HSCT), with more than 20,000 autologous and allogeneic transplant procedures performed to date. Patients in Phoenix and surrounding communities have access to City of Hope’s nationwide network of stem cell transplant and blood cancer experts. The Stem Cell Transplant Program at City of Hope Cancer Center Phoenix offers comprehensive care around the many steps involved in a transplant, including:

  • Finding a donor, for an allogeneic transplant
  • Harvesting cells
  • Preparing you for the transplant with a conditioning regimen
  • Infusing the harvested cells
  • Monitoring patients for side effects in the weeks and months
  • Following up in the months ahead and into survivorship

Leading-Edge Stem Cell Transplant Services

A stem cell transplant is a multi-week process that requires expert care and closely coordinated side-effect management.

City of Hope Phoenix performs both of these main types of stem cell transplants:

  • Autologous stem cell transplants use cells collected from the patient.
  • Allogeneic stem cell transplants use cells collected from a matching donor.

City of Hope does not use stem cells from embryos or aborted fetuses.

Conditions We Treat with HSCT Transplant in Phoenix

Stem cell transplants are used to treat a variety of blood disorders and multiple blood cancers, including:

  • Acute lymphocytic leukemia
  • Acute myeloid leukemia
  • Chronic lymphocytic leukemia
  • Chronic myeloid leukemia
  • Hodgkin lymphoma
  • Multiple Myeloma
  • Myelodysplastic syndromes
  • Non-Hodgkin lymphoma

A stem cell transplant may also be used to treat amyloidosis, a rare disorder in which the body produces abnormal proteins called amyloids. Amyloidosis is not a cancer, but up to 15% of patients with multiple myeloma may develop a type of the disease. The team of blood cancer experts at City of Hope Phoenix has the training and experience to diagnose and treat amyloidosis with leading-edge options.

What Sets Our Phoenix Stem Cell Therapy Program Apart?

To navigate the lengthy stem cell transplant process, you need an experienced team of hematologic oncologists, hematologists and other experts who can guide you every step of the way.

The clinicians at the Stem Cell Transplant Program at City of Hope Phoenix don’t just treat your cancer. Your care team will also include supportive care providers to help with managing the side effects of treatment and maintaining your quality of life.

A common side effect of an allogeneic transplant is graft vs. host disease (GVHD), a potentially life-threatening condition that occurs when the donated stem cells attack the body, just like they’d attack a foreign invader.

A mild case of GVHD may be a positive sign that indicates the new cells are attacking the underlying disease. Acute GVHD may require immediate attention and be treated with immunosuppressive drugs.

Supportive care services to help manage GVHD disease and other stem cell transplant side effects may include:

  • Behavioral health
  • Naturopathic support
  • Nutritional support
