Matthew Hedberg, M.D., Ph.D.
- Anatomic Pathology
- Dermotopathology
- Assistant Clinical Professor, Department of Pathology
Matthew Hedberg, M.D., Ph.D., is an assistant clinical professor of pathology at City of Hope® Cancer Center Duarte. As a dermatopathologist, he specializes in providing thorough and accurate pathology reports for skin cancer patients, helping their care teams identify innovative and targeted treatment options personalized to each patient. As a researcher, Dr. Hedberg studies the molecular mechanisms of skin disease, with a focus on skin cancers. Dr Hedberg was inspired to pursue a career as a physician-scientist because it combined his love of science with his desire to help others.
Following his undergraduate studies in chemistry at the University of Utah, where he researched translocation-associated sarcomas in the laboratory of Nobel laureate Dr. Mario Capecchi. Dr. Hedberg earned a combined M.D./Ph.D. at the University of Pittsburgh-Carnegie Mellon University’s Medical Scientist Training Program. His graduate research investigated the genetic and molecular underpinnings of upper aerodigestive tract cancers and biomarker-driven personalized medicine approaches for head and neck cancers. After completing a residency in anatomic pathology at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Dr. Hedberg pursued sub-specialty fellowship training in dermatopathology at the University of Pennsylvania’s Perelman School of Medicine. Following fellowship, Dr. Hedberg joined the faculty as an Instructor and attending dermatopathologist, and was also named the inaugural Waine C. Johnson Endowed Research Fellow of Dermatopathology.
His research has been published in journals including Cancer Discovery, Nature Communications and the Journal of Clinical Investigation.
