The symptoms of blood cancer may vary, depending on the type of blood cancer and the cancer’s stage. Here’s an overview of the common symptoms of blood cancers such as leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma to help patients and their families find out more.
Common Symptoms of Blood Cancer
In the early stages of blood cancers, such as leukemia, a patient may have no symptoms or signs of the disease, and the disease may be discovered through routine testing. While some patients may notice symptoms, it’s important to remember that those listed below may also be caused by other health conditions. Patients should consult with their medical team if they notice unexpected changes to their body.
Some of the common symptoms of blood cancer may include:
- Fatigue
- Frequent infections
- Shortness of breath or increased coughing
- Swelling in the abdomen
- Frequent bruising or bleeding
- Unexplained weight loss
- Night sweats
- Decreased appetite
- Fever
- Dizziness and/or confusion
- Changes to the texture or color of the skin, or lumps developing under the skin

Are the Symptoms of Blood Cancer in Females Different?
Men and women experience the same blood cancer symptoms, although symptoms may differ from one person to another.
As women age, they typically experience perimenopause, a change in the normal pattern of their monthly periods, and menopause, when their periods end for good. Both are often accompanied by symptoms like those of blood cancers, including night sweats, fatigue and skin changes. Due to these similarities, blood cancer may be overlooked as the cause of a patient’s symptoms.
If women notice unexpected or new body changes, it’s always wise to seek medical advice.
