Jianhua Yu, Ph.D., is a professor in the Department of Hematology & Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation. He is a member of the Hematologic Malignancies Research Institute and founding director of the Natural Killer Cell Biology Research Program within the Cellular Immunotherapy Center.

Dr. Yu’s research interests include NK cell biology, chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) NK cells, CAR T cells, oncolytic virus, bispecific antibodies, and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. His lab focuses on both basic and translational research relevant to developing innovative cellular immunotherapy and oncolytic virotherapy for the treatment of cancers such as multiple myeloma, acute myeloid leukemia, glioblastoma, and lung cancer.

Prior to joining City of Hope®, Dr. Yu was a tenured professor in the Division of Hematology of the College of Medicine and the Comprehensive Cancer Center at The Ohio State University. Dr. Yu received his Ph.D. degree from Purdue University in 2003 and then moved to The Ohio State University for his postdoctoral training, where he subsequently accepted a junior faculty position and advanced through the tenure track to become a full professor within six and a half years.

Dr. Yu has authored or co-authored over 240 publications, many of which are in high-impact journals, in the field of natural killer cell biology, cancer immunotherapy, oncolytic virotherapy, innate lymphoid cells (ILCs), hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, etc. Work from Dr. Yu and his colleagues has also resulted in over 30 patents (awarded or pending). Some discoveries from the Yu laboratory have been translated into clinical applications for treating cancer patients.

In 2015, Dr. Yu received The Jack Latham Memorial Award for Innovative Research from the American Association of Blood Banks, the Janet D. Rowley Medical Award from Gabrielle's Angel Foundation, and the FAME Faculty of the Year Award from the College of Medicine at The Ohio State University. Dr. Yu is a scholar at several national research foundations, including National Blood Foundation, American Cancer Society, and Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

Dr. Yu is a Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE), a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and a Fellow, American Academy of Microbiology (AAM).

Lab Members
The Yu lab is currently well-funded and composed of researchers at various levels including staff scientists, lab managers, postdoctoral researchers, graduate students, and lab technician, etc. The lab continuously has open positions at different levels. Salary will be based on experience. For fresh postdoctoral researchers, salary will be higher than the National Institutes of Health standard. Medical insurance and other benefits are also available for most positions. An academic degree(s) in immunology, virology, cell biology, molecular biology or biochemistry is required. Candidates should have formal molecular and cellular technique trainings and must be good at both spoken and written English. Candidates with experiences in virus or oncolytic virus, natural killer cells, stem cells, ILCs, T cells, cancer biology, CAR immune cells, animal studies, flow cytometry and/or FACS cell sorting are preferred. Candidates who recently completed his/her Ph.D. with a good publication record are encouraged to apply for the postdoctoral researcher position. We are seeking candidates who are hard-working, self-motivated and career oriented.
