City of Hope Orange County, the most advanced cancer research and treatment organization in Orange County, has released a report that evaluates the cancer incidence rate in people ages 18 and 49 in Orange County and Southern California amid a national epidemic of early-onset cancer diagnoses.

A new analysis from the International Agency for Research on Cancer linked 2.3 million cancer cases worldwide in 2024 to 12 infections, primarily H. pylori, HPV, HBV, EBV and HCV. Researchers highlighted prevention through vaccination and screenings. City of Hope's Joshua G. Cohen, M.D., emphasized that while certain infections increase cancer risk, most cancers are not infection-related. Cohen noted HPV as a common driver for various cancers and H. pylori for gastric cancer, advocating for HPV vaccination and screening.
