Sanford B. Church, M.D.
- Pulmonary and Critical Care
- Assistant Clinical Professor, Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, Department of Medicine
Sanford B. Church, M.D., was first inspired to pursue a career in health care by the example set by his grandmother, who was a nurse. Seeing the support that physicians offered a family member during their struggle with cancer further pushed him toward his calling to oncology, in which he aims to do the same for patients and families. Dr. Church’s philosophy of care involves providing patients and their families the knowledge and tools necessary to take control of their own health.
As a pulmonologist and critical-care specialist, Dr. Church is well-versed in techniques such as endobronchial ultrasound and navigational bronchoscopy to determine the source of problems with patients’ lungs. In a recent research study, he and his colleagues investigated whether current guidelines for lung cancer screening are effective for a higher-risk group of patients at the Veterans Administration Long Beach Healthcare System.
In his spare time, Dr. Church gets as much exercise as he can, especially by playing tennis and basketball, and otherwise finds ways to take advantage of the wonderful Southern California weather.
