Reconstructive Microsurgery Fellowship Program

The Reconstructive Microsurgery Fellowship Program at City of Hope is a one-year non-ACGME program dedicated to training future leaders in plastic surgery and microsurgery. Through apprenticeship style training, formal didactics, journal clubs, and mentored research opportunities, the fellow will master the subspeciality field of reconstructive microsurgery.

Under the supervision of the attending surgeon, the fellow will assist and perform microsurgical and reconstructive procedures, as well as become experienced with the latest complex microsurgical techniques. Techniques include perforator flaps and for reconstruction after treatment of cancers of the breast, head and neck, extremities, and torso. There is an emphasis on lymphatic supermicrosurgical reconstruction.

City of Hope offers a unique venue in terms of patient population and faculty. The fellow will interact frequently with Breast Surgery, Orthopaedic Oncology, Gynecological Oncology, and others to increase awareness and support utilization of advanced microsurgical reconstruction of cancer related defects, including microvascular anastomosis, lymphatic supermicrosurgery, and nerve repair, to name a few.

There will be one-on-one mentoring in the operating room and weekly educational conferences specific to micro-fellow education. The microsurgery fellow will help educate other subspeciality fellows, such as the rotating general surgery residents. The fellow will also work collaboratively with Physician Assistants and Nurse Practitioners on service to optimize care of microsurgical patients.

Clinical research in microsurgery is emphasized in the program. The fellow is expected to develop an academic project, present at microsurgery meetings, and publish in peer reviewed journals.

The fellowship is an integral part of City of Hope’s Department of Surgery and Division of Plastic Surgery
