Administrative Fellowship Program

City of Hope’s Administrative Fellowship Program provides a unique and rewarding experience in health care administration across our clinical enterprise, which includes a clinical research hospital, outpatient treatment center and a growing network of community practice sites across Southern California, Phoenix, Chicago and Atlanta.

Our program is designed for aspiring leaders with relevant experience who are motivated to take initiative, translate academic theory to practice and continuously learn. We focus on developing key competencies, skills and experiences to cultivate effective managers that will successfully lead projects, solve complex issues and improve daily operations.

Under the guidance of the preceptor, fellowship managers, and other executive leaders, fellows will complete meaningful project work, foster their leadership style and receive valuable mentorship. Fellows will be at the forefront of daily challenges, strategic initiatives and critical decision making.

City of Hope® offers two fellowship sites, City of Hope Cancer Center Duarte and City of Hope Orange County Lennar Foundation Cancer Center, each with their own unique set of experiences.

Structure

City of Hope’s Administrative Fellowship is a 12-month program that begins in July of each year. Fellows complete four to eight executive rotations in key areas across our clinical enterprise during the first half of the fellowship and focus on major project work throughout the remaining months. Fellows also complete routine work to support the clinical enterprise, attend meetings with executive leadership and shadow front line staff throughout the entire experience.

Executive Rotations
Vice presidents from our senior leadership team host fellows for one to three weeks to immerse them in their areas, accomplish valuable project work and build meaningful relationships. We align our executives’ goals with each fellows’ interests to determine their executive rotation schedule prior to the start of the fellowship year.

Areas for executive rotations include but are not limited to the following:

  • Hospital Operations
  • Ancillary Operations
  • Quality
  • Strategy & Business Development
  • Access Operations
  • Nursing & Patient Care Services
  • Community Network Operations
  • Ambulatory Operations
  • Clinical Enterprise Finance
  • Research Operations
  • Professional Development
  • Philanthropy
  • Other areas of Fellow Interest

Project Work

Projects are a significant component of our fellowship experience. Fellows work with multidisciplinary teams and independently to complete various types of projects. All major project work is reviewed and approved by our administrative fellowship preceptor and manager. Projects can be identified through a variety of sources, which include but are not limited to the following:

  • Strategic Initiatives
  • Capital Requests
  • Expansion Plans
  • Process Improvement
  • Business Development
  • Departmental Goals
  • Managerial Needs
  • Annual Surveys
  • Administrative and/or Project Support
