Pioneering Progress: The Origins of Bone Marrow Transplants at City of Hope

As City of Hope®'s BMT program continues to expand across our national network, bringing world-class care and cellular therapy to more communities, we reflect on its innovative origins.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of City of Hope’s bone marrow transplant program.

Since 1976, City of Hope has performed more than 20,000 bone marrow transplants, building one of the nation’s longest-running and highest-volume transplant programs.

Stephen J. Forman, M.D., director, Hematologic Malignancies Research Institute and T Cell Therapeutics Research Laboratories, shares where it all began and how City of Hope’s legacy of innovation continues to shape what comes next in transplant, cellular therapy and blood cancer care.

“This is about not just fixing an organ. This was about curing cancer…The fire in the belly still burns and as long as it does, we all will keep doing this. We have a lot more to do."
