In the United States, one in three women will be diagnosed with cancer in her lifetime. Among cancers unique to women is gynecologic cancer, which broadly refers to any malignancy forming in the female reproductive organs. At the City of Hope® Atlanta Gynecologic Cancer Center, we provide comprehensive, personalized care for gynecologic cancers, including those of the cervix, ovaries, uterus, vagina and vulva, which comprise most cases, as well as peritoneal and fallopian tube cancers, gestational trophoblastic disease, gynecologic organ sarcomas and genetically predisposed high-risk patients.
Gynecologic oncology is a rare specialty. After standard gynecology and obstetrics training, gynecologic oncologists undergo additional years of training and education in gynecologic cancer treatment. Specialization matters. For example, research shows that treatment by a gynecologic oncologist versus a general gynecologist or general surgeon increases overall survival among women with ovarian cancer. That’s why we surround patients with high-tech, high-touch care delivered by fellowship-trained and board-certified gynecologic oncologists and other experts, all in one location – the Atlanta Gynecologic Cancer Center.
Gynecologic Cancer Care in Atlanta
Whether your diagnosis is early-stage, rare or complex, our Gynecologic Cancer Center offers comprehensive care you can trust, with experts singularly focused on gynecologic malignancies, from diagnostics to treatment and supportive care.
Early Detection Matters
Abnormal bleeding is the most common sign of gynecologic cancer. Other symptoms include:
- Pelvic pain or pressure
- Abdominal or back pain
- Bloating and early satiety (feeling full quickly)
- Increased urination, constipation, diarrhea or thin or ribbon-like stool
- Itching or burning of the vulva
- Changes in vulva color or skin (rash, sores, warts, ulcers)
If you experience any of these symptoms over the course of a few weeks, see a doctor. Warning signs and symptoms of gynecologic cancers may be misattributed to less alarming conditions, resulting in diagnosis after the disease has progressed.
Safe and effective diagnostic methods for detecting cervical cancer and uterine cancer early are widely available, including Pap tests and pelvic exams. These may be part of your initial evaluation at City of Hope Atlanta, along with appropriate lab tests and diagnostic procedures ordered to inform a personalized care plan based on your individual needs and goals.
Forty-two percent of cancer cases diagnosed in the United States are potentially preventable trough lifestyle changes and/or regular screenings. City of Hope developed a cancer risk assessment using the gold standard of clinical guidelines—free for you to take online right now. Assess your risk and take control.
What Sets Our Atlanta Gynecologic Program Apart?
Speed to Personalized Care
At the City of Hope Atlanta Gynecologic Cancer Center, we meet your sense of urgency with consultations in as little as 24 hours and treatment plans within five to seven days.
Gynecologic cancers are often complex and involve a multidimensional treatment approach that may include a combination of surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, targeted therapy and/or immunotherapy.
Your gynecologic oncologist may use genetic testing to help assess risk based on genetic factors and advanced genomic testing to help pinpoint mutations in the tumor’s DNA, or mutations that are unique to your cancer. Whether genetic or genomic testing, the goal is to customize a care plan based on your results.
Supportive Care Services
Women diagnosed with gynecologic cancers may face unique concerns and challenges with pain, fertility, sexual health and self-image. That’s why supportive care clinicians – behavioral health therapists, registered dietitians, reconstructive surgeons, pelvic floor therapists and other specialists – are cornerstones of our Gynecologic Cancer Center. Services include:
- Pain management
- Fertility counseling and preservation
- Pelvic floor therapy
- Lymphedema prevention and management
- Nutritional, naturopathic and spiritual support
Sexual Health Support
Sexual health is important to quality of life. Unfortunately, this aspect of care is inadequately addressed in many health care settings.
At City of Hope Atlanta, our specialists understand that gynecologic cancer patients are especially at risk for symptoms and side effects that impact sexual health, including relationships, libido and sexual function. Together, they focus on helping women – before, during and after cancer treatment – navigate physical and psychosocial challenges like pelvic floor dysfunction, hormonal changes and depression, anxiety, fatigue and body image.
Clinical Trials
Research today is the treatment of tomorrow. In pursuit of innovative gynecologic cancer treatments, our Gynecologic Cancer Center team carefully selects clinical trials spanning immunotherapy, chemotherapy and other leading-edge options to help establish future standards of care for gynecologic patients.
