What Sets Our Atlanta Supportive Care Services Apart?
Cancer affects every part of your life — not just your health. That's why, at City of Hope Atlanta, supportive care is part of your overall treatment plan from the beginning. Our team works closely with your cancer specialists to help prevent and manage treatment side effects and support your physical and emotional well-being throughout your care.
While research shows supportive care benefits people with cancer, comprehensive, evidence-based programs remain unavailable to many patients nationwide. But here, you'll have access to a wide range of evidence-informed supportive care services in one place, including nutritional and naturopathic support, oncology rehabilitation and behavioral health. Whether you're managing fatigue, appetite changes, pain, stress or other challenges, our coordinated team is here to help improve your quality of life before, during and after treatment.
Leading-Edge Supportive Care for Cancer Patients
Supportive care can make a meaningful difference throughout your journey with cancer. At City of Hope Atlanta, we’re committed to making these specialized services an integral part of your care.
A cancer diagnosis may affect your emotional health as much as your physical health. Our behavioral health specialists offer individual, couples and family counseling, support groups, and evidence-based therapies to help support overall quality of life and well-being for patients throughout the cancer journey. These services include managing anxiety, depression, stress, grief, relationship concerns and other emotional challenges associated with cancer.
Our naturopathic providers use evidence-informed, natural, non-toxic approaches to help manage treatment side effects, such as nausea and fatigue, while supporting your overall health. They collaborate with your oncologist to ensure supplements and other therapies are safe and won't interfere with your cancer treatment.
Good nutrition plays a vital role in helping you stay strong during cancer treatment. Our registered dietitians provide personalized nutrition counseling, help manage eating and digestive challenges and create meal plans tailored to your needs. Services also include symptom-related nutrition support and coordination of tube feeding or IV nutrition when needed.
Cancer treatment can affect your strength, energy and ability to do everyday activities. Our physical therapists and occupational therapists help improve mobility, restore function and manage side effects such as lymphedema and neuropathy. Our speech-language pathologists provide specialized care for difficulty swallowing, chewing or jaw stiffness, mouth sores that make eating painful and cognitive changes such as "chemo brain."
Our pain management providers help relieve cancer-related pain and a wide range of treatment side effects that can affect your daily life, including headaches, digestive issues, eating difficulties, numbness, peripheral neuropathy, mouth sores, radiation burns and lymphedema. Using medication and other supportive therapies, they create a personalized plan to improve your comfort, mobility and quality of life.
Oncology social workers help patients, families and caregivers navigate practical, emotional and social challenges during cancer care. They can connect patients with resources for financial, food, housing and transportation needs, as well as community programs, grants and government support. They also help guide patients through Medicaid, Medicare, FMLA and disability benefits; provide psychosocial assessment and emotional support; facilitate patient and caregiver support groups; and assist with prescription affordability programs.
For many people, faith and spirituality are an important source of comfort during cancer care. Our chaplains offer prayer, spiritual counseling and compassionate support for patients and families of all faiths and backgrounds as part of your overall care.
We also offer chiropractic care and social work services to help address physical discomfort, connect you with helpful resources and provide practical support throughout your cancer journey.
Not every supportive care service is appropriate for every patient. Your City of Hope Atlanta care team will partner with you to determine which services are right for you and help coordinate appointments as part of your personalized care plan.

Director of Supportive Care and Integrative Medicine
My goal is to help patients live with greater comfort and quality of life by using every appropriate tool available to manage cancer-related pain. I’m passionate about tailoring care to each person’s needs and using advanced techniques to help reduce symptoms during treatment.
Nathan Neufeld, D.O.
Chief of Supportive Care Medicine, City of Hope Cancer Center Atlanta
I’m grateful for the opportunity to help patients feel more comfortable and supported through techniques such as guided imagery. On the behavioral health team, we want patients to know we’re here for them. It’s a privilege to help care for the spirit while traditional medicine cares for the body.
