Afshin Sam, M.D., M.Sc.

Interventional pulmonologist Ashfin Sam, M.D., M.Sc., wanted to be a physician from a young age, inspired by the positive impact made by compassionate health care providers in his community. He remains dedicated to providing the most advanced, evidence-based care and personalizing treatment to the unique needs and values of each patient and family.

Dr. Sam earned his medical degree from Iran University of Medical Sciences, after which he completed a master’s in Medical Informatics at City University of London. He was a resident in internal medicine at Saint Mary’s Hospital, an affiliate of Yale School of Medicine, where he became chief resident. He then completed fellowship in pulmonary and critical care at the University of Arizona, where he would later serve as Assistant Professor of Medicine. He had training in Interventional Pulmonary at University of Arizona and obtained board certification in Interventional Pulmonary in 2014 (AABIP). He worked at University of Arizona Cancer Center in Tucson providing support to patients with variety of hematologic and oncologic conditions and served as active member of Thoracic Oncology program. He was later promoted to associate professor of medicine at University of Arizona in 2019.

Born and raised in Iran, Dr. Sam is fluent in Farsi and has strong ties to the Iranian community in Los Angeles. Outside of work, he enjoys playing sports with friends and spending time with family.
