Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplant
Pediatric patients with childhood cancer and certain other conditions may require a bone marrow transplant as part of their treatment plan. This service may be recommended for patients with certain types of blood cancer, such as childhood leukemia or lymphoma, as well as sickle cell disease, thalassemia or bone marrow failure disorders.
A bone marrow transplant may also be referred to as a hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT). The stem cells may be collected from a donor’s bone marrow, from patients themselves or from umbilical cord blood.
Prior to a bone marrow transplant, the child will undergo bone marrow conditioning, which uses chemotherapy or radiation therapy to prepare the patient’s body for the new stem cells.
City of Hope’s clinicians and researchers collaborate extensively to evaluate new pediatric bone marrow transplant strategies and determine how to prevent complications and side effects.
City of Hope’s pediatric patients automatically gain access to a comprehensive array of support services designed specifically for children and young adults. This includes managing bone marrow transplant side effects, navigating school or work issues and fertility concerns.
