Oncologic Surgical Pathology Fellowship

The Oncologic Surgical Pathology Fellowship at City of Hope is a one-year ACGME accredited fellowship that offers fellows an opportunity to train in oncologic pathology at a National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center. The program emphasizes both diagnostic skills and research and is particularly suited for applicants interested in careers in academic pathology, as well as in community hospitals with a large oncology service. Under the guidance of our experienced and subspecialty trained faculty members, fellows will be provided with an enriched and unique learning experience in all subspecialties of complicated oncologic surgical pathology, as well as ancillary related areas, such as cytogenetics, immunohistochemistry and molecular diagnostics.

The responsibilities of fellows include supervised sign out of a comprehensive range of both in-house surgical specimens and submitted consultation cases, with a graduated sign out responsibility as the fellowship progresses. There are also dedicated frozen section rotations. Fellows will rotate through different subspecialties, preview slides, prepare reports, order ancillary tests and sign out with the designated faculty member. Additionally, fellows will actively participate in intradepartmental consensus conferences, Quality Assurance/Quality Improvement activities and tumor boards.

Academic activities are fostered. Fellows will participate in intradepartmental teaching conferences, slide seminars and journal club presentations. Ample material, resources and expert guidance are available for participation in research projects. Fellows are expected to engage in research endeavors within the department, present findings at national meetings and submit manuscripts to peer-reviewed scientific journals. Collegiately and friendly environment will foster professional and personal growth.
