Heather Hampel, M.S., CGC
Recruited to the Department of Medical Oncology in November 2021 from The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center, Heather Hampel is an internationally-recognized cancer genetic counselor and researcher with a particular emphasis on universal tumor screening of all colorectal and endometrial cancer patients for Lynch Syndrome.
This work has changed the standard-of-care genetic screening practice for colorectal cancer patients. Her work includes over 170 publications on the prevalence of Lynch Syndrome along colorectal and endometrial cancer patients, the best testing protocols, cost-effectiveness, and referral guidelines for cancer genetics.
She completed her B.S. in Molecular Genetics at The Ohio State University and M.S. in Human Genetics from Sarah Lawrence College in New York. She has held several national leadership positions, including serving on the Board of Directors for the American Board of Genetic Counseling from 2006-2011, as well as serving as President in 2009 and 2010.
She is a past President for the Council of the Collaborative Group of the Americas on the Inherited Colorectal Cancer and recently served on the Steering Committee of the National Colorectal Cancer Roundtable. She was elected and recently began her term as Secretary/Treasurer of the National Society of Genetic Counselors.
