Atlanta High-Risk Breast Cancer Program
One in eight women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. But some individuals have an increased breast cancer risk in comparison to average-risk people.
At City of Hope®, we believe knowledge is power. That’s why we created our Atlanta High-Risk Breast Cancer Program — a gateway to the experts and vital information you need to take charge of your breast health.
What Increases the Risk of Breast Cancer?
Contributing factors to increased risk of breast cancer include:
- Family history of cancer, especially breast and ovarian cancers
- Inherited mutations in BRCA1, BRCA2, RTPEN and/or TP53 genes
- Personal history of certain breast conditions: ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS), atypical lobular hyperplasia (ALH) and atypical ductal hyperplasia (ADH)
- Tobacco use and alcohol use or abuse
- Obesity
- Sedentary lifestyle
- Dense breast tissue
- Radiation therapy to the chest area between the ages of 10 and 30
- Use of hormone replacement therapy
- Early onset of menstrual cycle, late menopause or no history of childbirth
- History of breastfeeding
- Abnormalities in breast tissue
- Older age
Our experts evaluate these factors and other details from your personal history, family history and lifestyle to assess your breast cancer risk comprehensively.
Why Choose Our Atlanta
Breast Cancer Screening Program?
The High-Risk Breast Cancer Program at City of Hope Cancer Center Atlanta is staffed by a multidisciplinary team of oncologists, genetic counselors and supportive care providers, all under one roof. The providers at our Atlanta Breast Cancer Center partner with patients to determine, understand and manage breast cancer risk level through genetic counseling, cancer screenings and risk reduction.
Meet with a highly trained counselor to assess your inherited risk – or risk that comes from inheriting an abnormal, or mutated, gene from one or both parents – and determine whether genetic testing is right for you.
Undergo digital breast tomosynthesis or 3D mammography, ultrasound and breast MRI, for individuals who qualify.
Pinpoint risk factors you can control and outline strategies to reduce your risk, including more frequent screenings, lifestyle changes, medications and/or preventative surgery.
Together, our experts focus on empowering you with personalized insights, education and, importantly, an action plan to reduce your risk of developing breast cancer and give you peace of mind.
