Cherng H. Chao, M.D.
- Interventional Radiology
- Diagnostic Radiology
- Associate Clinical Professor, Division of Interventional Radiology, Department of Diagnostic Radiology
Cherng Chao, M.D., is an interventional radiologist at City of Hope® Cancer Center Duarte, where he uses imaging for guidance, to perform diagnostic procedures and to administer cancer therapies by accessing the skin using instruments the size of pen tip.
Dr. Chao comes to City of Hope after a long career in other tertiary academic centers, bringing experience from other comprehensive cancer centers and expertise in such areas as portal hypertension and transplant interventions. He believes in a multidisciplinary collaborative team approach to treating diseases, because patients benefit the most with a strong team working with the patient to treat and cure their disease.
Whether treating diseases of the neck, chest, abdomen, pelvis or extremities, Dr. Chao can help establish a diagnosis with an image-guided biopsy and then work together with oncologists, surgeons and other care providers to provide comprehensive treatment of their condition. Using the same imaging, Dr. Chao can provide effective therapies in conjunction with or as alternative to medical therapy or surgery.
Dr. Chao is board-certified by the American Board of Radiology, and holds certificates in both diagnostic radiology and vascular and interventional radiology. At City of Hope’s Los Angeles-area hospital, he performs a wide range of image-guided procedures, including ablations, embolizations, radioembolizations and osteoplasty to treat both benign and cancerous conditions.
Dr. Chao completed medical school, a general surgery internship and diagnostic radiology residency at University of California, San Diego. He then went on to complete a vascular and interventional radiology fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania. He is widely published in academic journals and is an active researcher on several trials involving image-guided therapy.
