Scott Shelfo, M.D.

“I am proud to be part of the integrated team of doctors and other care providers at City of Hope,” says Dr. Scott Shelfo, Medical Director of Urology and Associate Clinical Professor at City of Hope Atlanta.

Dr. Shelfo received his Bachelor of Science degree and Doctor of Medicine degree in six years rather than eight years through an accelerated biomedical program at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York, and Albany Medical College in Albany, New York.

During medical school, Dr. Shelfo received numerous awards for academic achievements in anatomy, biochemistry and pharmacology. He also was awarded the Dean’s Certificate for outstanding research endeavor. Dr. Shelfo was one of only five students who graduated with honors, cum laude, in 1991.

Following medical school, Dr. Shelfo completed his internship and residency in general surgery, followed by urologic residency, all at Yale-New Haven Hospital in New Haven, Connecticut, between 1991 and 1996. During this time, he twice received the Chairman’s Award for Highest In-Service Examination. In 1997, Dr. Shelfo completed a fellowship in urologic oncology  at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Florida.

Since 1997, Dr. Shelfo has offered skilled urologic cancer surgery to patients in Atlanta. He has been at the forefront of developing robotic surgical programs at Atlanta-area facilities. Dr. Shelfo served as the Chief of Urologic Surgery at Piedmont Fayette Hospital in Fayetteville, Georgia, for eight years and as the Chairman of the Department of Surgery for two years.

Dr. Shelfo joined our Atlanta-area hospital, when it opened its doors in 2012. As a Urologist/Uro-oncologist, he works alongside medical and radiation oncologists, as well as patient support staff, to help tailor care to the individual patient. He performs both open and laparoscopic robotic surgery for prostate, kidney and bladder cancers. Dr. Shelfo also is skilled in reconstructive techniques for the urinary tract after surgical excision of malignancy, such as neobladder creation.

Lifestyles Magazine has named Dr. Shelfo one of Atlanta’s top urologic surgeons and since 2013, Castle Connolly has identified him as a one of the Top Doctors^® in Atlanta

He is a member of the American Urologic Association, as well as the group’s City of Hope Atlanta section. Dr. Shelfo is a past member of the Sigma Xi Scientific Research Society and the Alpha Omega Alpha National Medical Honor Society.

Originally from New York, Dr. Shelfo lives with his family in Georgia.
