City of Hope Ranks Among Nation’s Top 10 Best Hospitals for Cancer

City of Hope was recognized as the eighth “Best Hospital” for cancer in the nation, according to U.S. News & World Report’s 2023-24 Best Hospitals: Specialty Ranking. This marks the second consecutive year that the cancer treatment center has been listed in the top 10 of the publication’s annual rankings and the 17th consecutive year it has been distinguished as one of the nation’s elite cancer hospitals.     
 
“This achievement is testament to our absolute commitment to the patient experience and the quality, innovation and care demonstrated by our extraordinary team,” said Michael Caligiuri, M.D., president of City of Hope National Medical Center and the Deana and Steve Campbell Physician-in-Chief Distinguished Chair. “Throughout our transformation into a national cancer research and treatment system, we’ve remained laser focused on providing optimal cancer care to all patients who walk through our doors. We are energized by this recognition and look forward to expanding access and closing the gap between the innovation taking place at academic cancer centers and the people who can actually access these breakthroughs.” 
 
City of Hope’s high placement on the U.S. News & World Report list of “Best Hospitals” for cancer was aided by several factors, including high reputation scores, improved mortality rates and discharge to home metrics, and the overall patient experience. As part of the rankings, City of Hope was also rated as high performing in several surgical areas, including lung, colon, prostate, uterine, ovarian and gastrointestinal, as well as in the treatment of leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma and in the areas of urology and gastroenterology.  
 
The cancer hospital ranking is compiled based on data from 899 eligible cancer hospitals nationwide; U.S. News & World Report’s rankings cover 15 specialty areas in total. A cancer hospital’s overall score reflects performance in such areas as structure, designation as a National Cancer Institute (NCI) comprehensive cancer center, expert opinion and survival.  
 
Today’s announcement is the latest recognition for City of Hope as it continues its transformation into a national cancer research and treatment system. Earlier this year, City of Hope received the highest rating possible — a rating of “Exceptional” — from the NCI. The rating puts the center in the top echelon of the nation’s 54 NCI-designated comprehensive cancer centers. City of Hope was also recently recognized by Newsweek as one of “America’s Best Cancer Hospitals,” ranking in the top 7% of cancer hospitals in the country.  
 
In recent years, City of Hope has grown substantially with the expansion of its clinical network in Southern California, addition of genomics leader Translational Genomics Research Institute, launch of its employer cancer care benefits offering AccessHopeTM, acquisition of Cancer Treatment Centers of America and opening an advanced cancer center in Orange County, California. With one of the nation’s top comprehensive cancer centers at its core, City of Hope continues to make great progress in bringing its leading-edge treatments and care protocols to these new communities.
