Thalassemia is a genetically inherited blood disorder that prevents the body from producing enough hemoglobin – a protein that allows red blood cells to carry oxygen throughout the body. People with thalassemia usually have anemia. This can cause no symptoms, mild health issues or, in rare cases, more serious problems.
City of Hope offers leading-edge treatment options such as gene therapy, blood transfusions and bone marrow transplants for the common and rare forms of both alpha thalassemia and beta thalassemia.
Thalassemia is an inherited blood disorder passed on genetically from parents to their children. Whether someone has alpha or beta thalassemia depends on the type and number of DNA mutations they inherit. It’s usually diagnosed using blood tests.
Some people with thalassemia have no symptoms. Those with mild or moderate thalassemia may experience fatigue and weakness, issues with their bones, delayed puberty or slow body growth. Problems with the body’s organs can be a sign of severe thalassemia.
Hemoglobin is a protein containing two parts called an alpha chain and beta chain. Alpha thalassemia affects the alpha chain, while beta thalassemia affects the beta chain. Patients are diagnosed after the care team evaluates which of these two conditions they have and how severe it is.
Treatments for thalassemia may include regular blood transfusions — often with additional medication to ensure the body maintains healthy iron levels — as well as advanced and innovative gene therapies. Bone marrow transplants may also be used for some patients.
