Why we walk: Millie Lopez

Walk for Hope is City of Hope’s largest annual fundraiser to benefit cancer research — and this year it’s going national! Walks will be hosted in Los Angeles, Phoenix, Atlanta, Chicago and Orange County, California or (virtually) in your own community. There are so many reasons to walk — every participant has their own incredibly personal and moving tribute to hope. But the commitment we all share is to one day end cancer for all. Here, our volunteers share their stories about why we walk.

How many walks have you attended?

Five. (2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022)

Why do you walk?

I walk to support everyone who is a patient, a survivor, and their families that have been touched by cancer.

What’s your connection to City of Hope®?

My connection to City of Hope is I am a survivor and employee.

Who will you be walking with this year?

My husband, 6-year-old son, mom, dad, brothers, nephews and sister-in-law. I am blessed to have a strong and very supportive family.

Where will you be walking?

Duarte, California, campus. I believe City of Hope is bringing back the walk in person.

What advice do you have for a first-time participant to make the most of their Walk experience?

This is a wonderful experience. My advice for all first-time participants:

  1.  Sign up and share their story on their home page and personalize it with their picture with family and friends.

  2. Forward the home link or QR code to support you in the Walk.

  3. Lots of supporters may not be able to join in the Walk, but the monetary contribution is also very helpful. The best way to think about this Walk: everyone's donation helps find a cure for cancer. You will not believe how many people are willing to help and give donations, as they have had or are currently going through this cancer journey

What part of City of Hope’s mission speaks to you directly and why?

"HOPE" into reality is what speaks to me the most. City of Hope is great in making patients have hope, and you cannot find a better place to find compassion from all staff and providers.
