Jaisha Mathew, M.D., became a doctor after seeing the profession up close at home. She was influenced by her father (“a model physician”) who raised her to appreciate both the science and humanity of medicine.
Dr. Mathew trained as a psychiatrist but found her calling in interventional pain management, helping her patients manage the pain and emotional impact of serious illness. “As doctors, we are naturally drawn to comfort others,” she says. “Treating pain has been an extension of this for me.”
After earning her M.D. at Medical University of Silesia (Poland's largest medical school), Dr. Mathew completed her residency in psychiatry and fellowship in hospice and palliative care at New York Medical College-Metropolitan Hospital, followed by a fellowship in pain medicine at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.
Having worked as a hospice physician in New York, Dr. Mathew believes she has found her niche with City of Hope's supportive care team.
