Hematology & Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation
Assistant Clinical Professor
Julio C. Alvarenga, M.D., is an assistant clinical professor specializing in hematology and hematopoietic cell transplantation at City of Hope® Orange County Lennar Foundation Cancer Center, with a deep focus on acute leukemias and transplant immunology. Drawn to medicine by its unique intersection of scientific discovery and human connection, Dr. Alvarenga views his role as one of presence, guidance and partnership during some of life’s most vulnerable moments. His clinical and research interests center on stem cell transplantation, where immunology and precision medicine converge to offer patients renewed possibilities for remission and long-term survival.
Dr. Alvarenga’s work has contributed to advancing transplant immunobiology, particularly in optimizing donor selection to improve outcomes and reduce transplant-related mortality. His academic contributions include leading innovations designed to make complex transplant therapies safer and more accessible, reflecting his belief that progress in science must translate directly into better patient experiences and outcomes.
He received his medical degree from the National Autonomous University of Honduras and completed extensive postgraduate training, including multiple residencies in internal medicine and radiation oncology, followed by fellowships in hematology-oncology and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Dr. Alvarenga trained at several international and United States institutions, including City of Hope National Medical Center, where his professional philosophy was shaped by a culture that balances scientific rigor with compassionate care.
Dr. Alvarenga is committed to building strong connections within the Orange County community and approaches every patient relationship with honesty, precision and shared decision-making. He speaks Spanish fluently.
