Teen Leukemia Patient Thrives with Help from Supportive Care

Donor support helped City of Hope become a pioneer in supportive care, improving outcomes for patients like Diego Serna. Watch his story, which aired on BBC.
This film was produced for City of Hope® by BBC StoryWorks Commercial Productions.

When City of Hope® Children’s Cancer Center patient Diego Serna was diagnosed with an aggressive form of leukemia, his world turned upside down. The physical and emotional toll of treatment was often overwhelming, leading the teen to isolate himself and leaving his family feeling helpless.

But thanks to City of Hope Children's Cancer Center’s supportive care, Diego received the counseling and emotional support he needed to navigate his cancer journey and improve his quality of life. Diego and his dad, Isaias, discuss the challenges he faced and how supportive care became a lifeline when he needed it the most.

None of this would be possible without the incredible generosity of The Sheri and Les Biller Family Foundation, whose unwavering support has made a lasting impact on our ability to provide world-class supportive care. Their commitment over the years has changed lives — helping families facing the toughest of challenges find hope. Every gift to City of Hope and our supportive care medicine programs make these stories of strength, courage and healing possible.
