Yanghee Woo, M.D., is a surgeon-scientist and internationally recognized leader in gastric and gastroesophageal cancers, and a pioneer in robotic surgery for complex abdominal tumors involving the stomach, pancreas and small bowel. An early adopter of innovative surgical technologies, she specializes in challenging oncologic operations for gastric cancer and other upper gastrointestinal and abdominal malignancies, with expertise spanning advanced robotic and minimally invasive techniques to major open and multivisceral operations.
As Professor and Director of the GI Minimally Invasive Therapies Program, Dr. Woo leads the multidisciplinary care of patients with gastric and gastroesophageal cancers at City of Hope, working with a large team of specialists to provide coordinated, individualized care across the continuum of disease. Her approach integrates specialized surgery, peritoneal directed options, systemic therapy, clinical trials and translational research with compassionate, patient-centered care.
As California’s highest-volume gastric cancer surgeon, Dr. Woo is particularly recognized for her expertise in gastrectomy with D2 lymphadenectomy and for advancing and standardizing robotic approaches to complex gastric cancer surgery. Her broader surgical practice encompasses gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs), neuroendocrine tumors (NETs), pancreatic and small bowel tumors, and locally advanced abdominal malignancies requiring complex open or multivisceral resections.
Dr. Woo has particular expertise in the multimodal treatment of gastric cancer with peritoneal metastases, integrating systemic therapy with minimally invasive peritoneal-directed approaches, including PIPAC and HIPEC, and conversion surgery in appropriately selected patients. This multidisciplinary strategy seeks to individualize treatment according to each patient’s disease, treatment response, needs and goals.
As a surgeon-scientist, Dr. Woo leads clinical and translational research focused on improving outcomes for patients with difficult-to-treat gastrointestinal cancers. She leads clinical trials in surgical innovation and investigates novel therapeutic strategies, including oncolytic viral therapies for peritoneal metastases and malignant ascites arising from gastric and pancreatic cancers.
Beyond the operating room and laboratory, Dr. Woo has fostered international collaborations and educational exchanges, mentoring surgeons from around the world and contributing to advances in gastric cancer surgery and multidisciplinary care. She has contributed to more than 140 peer-reviewed publications.
Fittingly, Yang Hee means “bright hope,” reflecting her commitment to compassionate care, advancing surgical innovation, and creating new possibilities for patients with complex gastrointestinal cancers.
