On Health Equities
As an associate professor in the Department of Population Sciences at City of Hope, Christopher Sistrunk, Ph.D., focuses on developing a research program that serves underrepresented minority communities. One of his research projects studies the increasing role the environment plays on genetic imprinting, specifically focusing on the environmental impacts on drinking water and how underrepresented communities are affected genetically through chronic exposures.
Throughout his career as a research scientist, Dr. Sistrunk has served as an academic advisor and a mentor to minority and disadvantaged populations. He is dedicated to educating and training the next generation of minority scientist and health care professionals. In an effort to increase the number of underrepresented minorities entering the field of medicine and biomedical research, Dr. Sistrunk co-founded and currently serves as director of the Medical and Translation Research Apprenticeship Program. He also served as director of City of Hope’s Science Education Partnership Award Consortium program, and is co-principal investigator of the YES2SUCCESS program (Youth Enjoying Science Seeking Useful Comprehensive Cancer Education Strategies for Students).
