Watching loved ones deal with breast cancer motivated Jeff Chang, M.D., M.S., to become a physician so he could help others facing similar challenges.
Dr. Chang is a reconstructive surgeon with special expertise in microsurgery, reconnecting very small blood vessels, lymphatic vessels and nerves using tiny stitches often thinner than a human hair. He is most interested in using his skill to help restore breast cancer patients’ physical appearance, as well as treat lymphedema, a problem that occurs after breast cancer treatment causing swelling of the arm.
A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Dr. Chang earned his medical degree at Medical College of Wisconsin. He continued his surgical and microsurgical training at Harvard Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Stanford University and the University of Southern California.
The author of numerous publications and presentations, Dr. Chang is also a longtime instructor of neuroscience and microsurgery. He enjoys working in City of Hope’s collaborative atmosphere.

[...] Dr Chang with the help of [...] has given me a second chance. I was very reluctant to have the surgery I had, however Dr Chang was very patient, informative and just so present with me I felt I was under the best care and in fact I was! Himself and his team are impeccable. I am so grateful for the new breast I have, and I hope it will serve me well cancer free! The support while healing was incredible. I felt cared for and that was so comforting in my healing journey! Dr Chang never rushed through the consultation or follow up visits, he answers all the questions and you feel the sense of competence and that I am in hands of a very thorough and capable surgeon. He is so mindful of the solutions he has for a patient like me. I am forever grateful for keeping me safe during the surgery to him and the team of nurses and other doctors. I was very scared beforehand and couldn't imagine myself cutting off part of my body, but the option to restore it and the quality of work has allowed me to regain my feminine footing and the breast feels like a chance to enjoy life!
