A renowned leader in cancer research, Daniel D. Von Hoff, M.D., F.A.C.P., F.A.S.C.O., F.A.A.C.R., is a physician-scholar who has helped develop multiple anti-cancer medications and holds patents for 20 medical technologies and therapeutics. Dr. Von Hoff is a distinguished professor of clinical genomics and therapeutics research at the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen), part of the City of Hope network, and also serves as a distinguished professor of medical oncology at City of Hope® Cancer Center Phoenix.
Dr. Von Hoff’s approach to working with patients combines a person-centered philosophy with his deep expertise in leading-edge translational science. He is a member of the gastrointestinal (GI) cancers team at City of Hope Phoenix, where he diagnoses and treats pancreatic cancer and other cancers of the GI system, with the goal of improving outcomes and quality of life, while continuing to hold a research portfolio at TGen.
In this research role, Dr. Von Hoff collaborates on a wide range of initiatives targeting the development of new medicines for treating cancer. Current projects include studies focusing on acoustic cluster therapy and tumor-treating electrical fields. Over his 50-year career, Dr. Von Hoff has published more than a thousand peer-reviewed articles, many of which have been at the leading edge of cancer research, and he’s received dozens of honors and awards.
Prior to his current positions, Dr. Von Hoff was executive vice president of the Division of Molecular Medicine at TGen. He continues to hold professorships at both Mayo Clinic and the University of Arizona and is the Virginia G. Piper Distinguished Chair for Innovative Cancer Research at HonorHealth Research Institute in Scottsdale, Arizona. He also previously worked at the National Cancer Institute and the University of Texas Health Center.
Dr. Von Hoff is an active member of the oncology community, serving on the American Association for Cancer Research’s scientific advisory council, and is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and a fellow of the American College of Physicians. He earned his medical degree at the Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City and completed his internship and residency at the University of California, San Francisco.
