An experienced surgical oncologist and attending surgeon at City of Hope® Cancer Center Phoenix, David Luyimbazi, M.D., specializes in treating patients with cancers affecting the liver, pancreas and biliary system, soft tissue and skin malignancies and tumors that have spread to the abdominal cavity from other parts of the body. He has expertise in both conventional surgical techniques as well as minimally invasive options and innovative therapies such as hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC).
When working with patients and their families, Dr. Luyimbazi takes a compassionate, collaborative approach to care. He embraces the challenge of crafting a unique pathway and treatment plan for each patient, taking into account their values, their overall health and their treatment goals. He is dedicated to finding a sustained chance of cure whenever possible, and if treatment is not curative, to maintaining quality of life.
After completing his medical degree at New York College of Medicine in Valhalla, Dr. Luyimbazi completed an internship and residency in general surgery at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine in Farmington, a post-doctoral research fellowship at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, and a clinical fellowship in complex surgical oncology at City of Hope National Medical Center in Duarte, California.
Dr. Luyimbazi is also a physician-scholar committed to serving the medical community. He has multiple publications to his name, has presented on his research across the United States and is a member of professional associations including the Society of Surgical Oncology, the American College of Surgeons and the International Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association. He has served as a representative for the American College of Surgeons on the Commission on Cancer and has been recognized with multiple honors and awards, including the Monroe Himelstein, M.D., Memorial Award and inclusion on Virginia Business magazine’s list of the state’s top doctors in surgical oncology.
