As an interventional pulmonologist at City of Hope® Cancer Center Atlanta, Francisco A. Almeida, M.D., M.S., helps diagnose and treat cancers and non-cancerous conditions affecting the lungs, airways and pleura using a wide range of therapies, including flexible and rigid bronchoscopy, endobronchial ultrasound, and electromagnetic and robotic navigational bronchoscopy.
Dr. Almeida collaborates closely with his fellow cancer experts in the diagnosis and staging of lung cancer. Committed to a compassionate approach to care that reduces the number of procedures required for patients during the diagnosis process, he works collaboratively with patients’ cancer care teams to ensure that existing pulmonary health conditions are managed or treated.
Dr. Almeida completed his medical degree in Brazil at the Federal University of Ceara School of Medicine. He pursued his internal medicine training in the United States at Philadelphia’s Jefferson Einstein Health Philadelphia Hospital, then completed a pulmonary and critical care medicine fellowship at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in the same city. He completed his medical training with a subspecialty fellowship in interventional pulmonology at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston along with earning a master’s degree in pharmacology from the Jefferson Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences.
A member of multiple professional organizations and active physician-scientist, Dr. Almeida has more than 130 publications, abstract presentations and book chapters to his name on topics such as the role interventional pulmonology can play in effectively diagnosing and staging lung cancer. He is fluent in English and Portuguese, and speaks some Spanish.
