Mohamed El-Shahawy, M.D., M.P.H., M.H.A., is Clinical Professor in the Department of Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism at City of Hope and a Clinical Professor of Medicine at Keck-USC School of Medicine. Professor El-Shahawy is board-certified in internal medicine and nephrology and is a UNOS-certified transplant nephrologist. He completed his residency in internal medicine at St. Mary's Hospital/Yale University School of Medicine. Dr. El-Shahawy went on to complete a fellowship in nephrology and transplantation at the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania and a fellowship in nephrology at LAC/USC Medical Center.
Professor El-Shahawy served as the Medical Director of the Kidney and Pancreas Transplantation program of the Keck-USC School of Medicine from 1991 to 2007. Since 2007, Dr. El-Shahawy has been serving as the Islet Transplant Physician for the City of Hope Islet Cell Transplant Program. Dr. El-Shahawy's research is centered around optimizing the immunosuppressive management of patients with diabetes undergoing islet cell transplantation. In addition, Dr. El-Shahawy is active in research involving the clinical outcome of patients with the different stages chronic kidney disease (CKD) in both diabetics and non-diabetics, including strategies to delay the progression of the disease and to delay the need for dialysis therapy.
