- Assistant Professor, Division of Leukemia, Department of Hematology & Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation
Shukaib Arslan, M.D., earned his medical degree from King Edward Medical University, a prestigious and renowned medical institution in Pakistan. Dr. Arslan completed his residency in Internal Medicine from Wayne State University in Detroit, MI before pursuing a Hematology-Oncology fellowship at Michigan State University and then fellowship in Bone Marrow Transplant at City of Hope® National Medical Center. Due to his stellar performance in the ABIM Hematology Boards exam, he was invited to serve on the ABIM Hematology standard setting committee.
Dr. Arslan’s passion of taking care of patients with hematological malignancies is driven from his personal family experience and finds it extremely rewarding. He carries the finest interpersonal skills and believes in multidisciplinary approach to taking care of complex hematological disorders. He engages with patients and their families so they have better understanding of their condition and available therapies to make informed decisions.
Dr. Arslan’s clinical and research interests center on donor identification, therapy of post-transplant relapse of acute leukemia, treatment of graft versus host disease (GVHD) as well as outcomes of alternative donor transplant. Dr. Arslan is currently the principal investigator for clinical trials including cellular therapy and therapies for GVHD. Dr. Arslan is also participating as co-investigator in several studies involving novel therapies for acute leukemia in upfront and relapsed setting. His research also focuses on treatment of complications from ABO incompatible allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation such as pure red cell aplasia.
Dr. Arslan also has special interest in donor identification for transplant and serves on the Donor Selection Committee in the department of Hematology and Hematopoietic Cell transplant. Donor selection is a highly specialized process where physicians identify the best donors for patients to improve outcomes. This process considers the analysis of detailed HLA typing of the patient and potential donors as well as ABO blood group typing, CMV serostatus, age, gender, and HLA antibodies.
Dr. Arslan has authored multiple articles in peer reviewed journals and book chapters and regularly presents his work in national and international meetings. He serves as a member of CIBMTR Chronic Leukemia Working Committee.
