Simona De Michele, M.D., is a dedicated pathologist with a keen focus on cancer diagnosis and research. She specializes in gastrointestinal and pancreatobiliary diseases and cancers, with an emphasis on molecular and immunohistochemical profiling of tumors to enhance diagnostic accuracy and deepen understanding of disease mechanisms.
An accomplished educator and frequent lecturer, Dr. De Michele has contributed to pioneering studies on COVID-19 pathology and SATB2 immunohistochemistry. Additionally, she has integrated machine learning and digital pathology techniques to automate biopsy analysis and disease detection. Her work has been published in prestigious peer-reviewed journals such as Modern Pathology, Science Immunology, and JAMA Dermatology. In recognition of her contributions to the field, she earned the First Place Research Award from the Papanicolaou Society of Cytopathology at the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology annual meeting in 2021.
Throughout her career, Dr. De Michele served as a pathologist at Providence St. Joseph Hospital in Orange, CA, and Riverside Community Hospital in Riverside, CA. In both positions, she was instrumental in diagnosing a variety of complex cases, covering a broad spectrum of surgical pathology specimens, leading multidisciplinary tumor boards, while also overseeing the clinical laboratories and blood banks.
She served as a Fellow and Instructor in Gastrointestinal, Pancreatobiliary, and Hepatic Pathology at Columbia University Irving Medical Center in New York, where she had previously served as Resident and Chief Resident in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology. She earned her M.D. from Università degli Studi dell’Insubria in her native Italy.
