Waasil Kareem, M.D., is an interventional pulmonologist and assistant clinical professor in the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine. As an interventional pulmonologist, Dr. Kareem provides minimally invasive therapies for lung and thoracic diseases, while providing innovative diagnostic tools and treatments. He is specialized in multiple advanced procedures, including robotic bronchoscopy, medical thoracoscopy, rigid bronchoscopy, endobronchial ultrasound, and management of malignant airway obstructive disorders via airway stenting and thermal techniques.
Dr. Kareem received his medical degree from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. He completed postgraduate training in Internal medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, where he served as chief resident. He completed his training in pulmonary and critical care at the University of Southern California, where he ultimately became chief fellow. Dr. Kareem pursued further subspecialty training in interventional pulmonology at University of California Los Angeles. Before his medical training, Dr. Kareem worked in biomedical research and in health care policy.
Dr. Kareem strives to listen actively to his patients, answer their questions comprehensively and coherently, and partner with them in navigating treatment. For him, there’s no greater feeling than seeing that a patient can breathe without difficulty again after a short procedure.
Dr. Kareem is fluent in Urdu and Hindi. Outside of work, he enjoys rooting for his favorite sports teams and spending time with his wife and young daughter.
