Chicago-Area Breast Cancer Screenings
Don’t Wait. Get Answers Today.
One in eight women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. Each year, over 10,500 women in Illinois and over 5,000 women in Wisconsin are expected to be diagnosed with breast cancer.
It’s no secret that early detection is key: When breast cancer is caught early, the five-year survival rate is 99%.
Who Should Be Screened for Breast Cancer?
Cancer screenings help check for cancer in individuals who are not currently showing symptoms of breast cancer. In general, women considered at average risk for developing breast cancer should begin yearly mammograms at the age of 40.
Women considered to be at a higher risk of breast cancer may require additional testing, such as screening, ultrasound or MRI. Factors that can increase the risk of developing breast cancer include:
- A known BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene mutation
- A first-degree relative with a known BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene mutation
- Li-Fraumeni syndrome, Cowden syndrome or a first-degree relative with one of these conditions
- A personal history of breast, ovarian, tubal or peritoneal cancer
- A previous biopsy indicating a high-risk lesion
- Radiation therapy to the chest area
- Dense breasts
- A 20% calculated lifetime risk of cancer, as told to you by a doctor
