Clinical Excellence
The Joint Commission
City of Hope Chicago has been continuously awarded the Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for Hospital Accreditation for nearly four decades, which ensures hospitals meet appropriate standards for safety and high-quality patient care. City of Hope Chicago voluntarily undergoes a rigorous, unannounced inspection survey by the Joint Commission every three years.
During the review, Joint Commission expert surveyors assess several key areas, including infection control, leadership, medication management and overall hospital environment. The surveyors also conduct on-site observations and interviews.
American Society of Clinical Oncology Quality Oncology Practice Initiative
City of Hope Chicago has earned the Quality Oncology Practice Initiative (QOPI®) Certification, an affiliate of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO). This distinction reflects our dedication to meeting the highest standards for safe, quality cancer care.
The prestigious QOPI Certification Program (QCP™), launched in January 2010, designates practices that score high on the key QOPI quality measures and meet rigorous chemotherapy safety standards established by ASCO and the Oncology Nursing Society. It’s a project of ASCO's Institute for Quality, which is dedicated to advancing innovative quality improvement programs.
American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer
For nearly four decades, City of Hope Chicago has held accreditation by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (CoC) — a distinction recognizing cancer programs that strive for quality cancer care excellence. The CoC is a consortium of professional organizations dedicated to improving survival and quality of life for cancer patients through rigorous standard setting, prevention strategies, leading-edge research, comprehensive education and ongoing monitoring of quality care.
CoC standards require facilities to create meaningful processes for implementation of patient-centered care, while also participating in the National Cancer Database, helping shape the future of oncology care through valuable research and data-driven insights.
Magnet Recognition®
At City of Hope Chicago, exceptional nursing is one of the pillars of our commitment for quality and compassionate patient care. We’re honored to be a Magnet-recognized hospital, a designation awarded by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). Magnet status is considered the highest honor a hospital can achieve for its nursing programs. Of the nearly 5,000 hospitals in the United States, fewer than 9% have Magnet recognition.
The ANCC honors organizations that demonstrate excellence in nursing practice and adherence to national standards and best practices in patient care. Our hospital has continuously held this designation for over a decade, showcasing our dedication to compassionate, expert-driven patient care at every step of the treatment process.
Press Ganey Serious Safety Event Rate® Reduction Award
In 2025, City of Hope Chicago was one of only 15 organizations nationwide to be awarded the Press Ganey Serious Safety Event Rate® Reduction Award for achievements tied to patient safety.
Patient Experience
Press Ganey Guardian of Excellence Award
In 2024, City of Hope Chicago was awarded with the Press Ganey Guardian of Excellence Award for our performance in patient experience measures, including patients’ likelihood to recommend City of Hope and patient satisfaction. This award is given to organizations that rank in the 95th percentile nationwide, according to Medical Practice Survey data collected between April 2022 and March 2023.
Press Ganey Pinnacle of Excellence Award
In 2024, City of Hope Chicago was also awarded with the Press Ganey Pinnacle of Excellence Award, granted over a three-year period and reserved for the top 5% of high-performing hospitals nationally. It recognizes organizations that perform high on inpatient satisfaction measured by Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems survey results three years in a row, with the 2024 designation based on data collected from April 2020 to March 2023. Only a maximum of four hospitals in a year are chosen in the inpatient category to receive this award.

American College of Radiology®
City of Hope Chicago is accredited by the American College of Radiology (ACR)® in multiple imaging modalities: CT, PET, ultrasound, nuclear medicine and MRI. ACR accreditation signifies exceptional imaging quality and patient safety, giving patients peace of mind that our diagnostic capabilities are held to the highest industry standards. As part of the accreditation, the hospital is reviewed to make sure our teams meet ACR requirements for advanced equipment, medical personnel and quality assurance.
American College of Radiology® Designated Comprehensive Breast Imaging Center
City of Hope Cancer Center is recognized as a Designated Comprehensive Breast Imaging Center by the ACR, with full accreditation in mammography, stereotactic breast biopsy, breast ultrasound, ultrasound-guided breast biopsy and breast MRI. This elite accreditation is awarded to health care facilities that meet the highest standards in breast imaging quality, accuracy and patient care.
American College of Radiology® Lung Cancer Screening Center™
City of Hope Chicago is designated a Lung Cancer Screening Center by the ACR, highlighting our ability to deliver reliable and effective lung cancer diagnostics. This designation is considered the gold standard in medical imaging and is awarded to hospitals and health care facilities that meet the requirements and protocols established by the ACR Lung Cancer Screening Committee.
ACR accreditation for Lung Cancer Screening Centers evaluates imaging technology, team expertise in test interpretation and accuracy, and safety protocols.
Pathology & Cellular Therapy
College of American Pathologists
At City of Hope Chicago, laboratory precision and scientific innovation go hand in hand. Our laboratory holds accreditation from the College of American Pathologists, which sets the gold standard in laboratory quality and safety and accredits the entire spectrum of laboratory test disciplines. With a scientifically rigorous accreditation checklist, hospitals must meet requirements for records and quality control of procedures, laboratory staff qualifications, equipment, facilities, safety program and record, and overall management.
Stem Cell Transplant and Cell Therapy Program Accreditation
For the past decade, City of Hope Chicago has continuously received accreditation by the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT), a distinction given to facilities that meet the highest standards in clinical care for stem cell therapy, immune effector therapy and cell therapy product collection, and cell therapy product processing.
FACT, an internationally recognized accrediting body for hospitals and medical institutions that perform stem cell transplants, recognizes excellence by facilities that meet rigorous standards, including those on clinical care, donor management, apheresis collection (technique for blood stem cell collection), processing storage and transportation to maintain the integrity of collected stem cells, as well as autologous administration and cell release.
AABB Accreditation for Excellence in Blood Cancer Care
City of Hope Chicago is proud to be accredited by the Association for the Advancement of Blood & Biotherapies (AABB), a recognition that reflects our commitment to excellence in blood cancer treatment and transfusion medicine. AABB accreditation is internationally recognized as a symbol of excellence in transfusion medicine and cellular therapies. Organizations that receive this accreditation are held to high standards in blood cellular therapy and for delivering safe, effective and research-driven care to patients battling blood cancers.

APEx Accreditation
City of Hope Chicago is an Accreditation Program for Excellence® (APEx) accredited program by the American Society of Radiation Oncology. Considered the gold standard for radiation oncology, this accreditation signifies our hospital has met challenging national standards for radiation precision and effectiveness, patient safety, team expertise, the use of advanced technology, and a commitment to continuous quality improvement.
Breast Cancer
Certified Quality Breast Center of Excellence™
City of Hope Chicago Breast Cancer Center is the only center in Illinois, and one of fewer than ten comprehensive centers nationally, to be recognized as a Certified Quality Breast Center of Excellence™ by the National Quality Measures for Breast Centers Program™. Our Chicago-area hospital has continuously maintained this annual designation since 2013, demonstrating our excellence in breast cancer treatment. The Certified Quality Breast Center of Excellence is the highest certification level.
In order to achieve this certification, hospitals must prove their commitment to patient-centered excellence, ensuring timely follow-up and ongoing care, personalized treatment plans, accurate diagnoses that use leading-edge technology, access to a full range of treatment options and opportunities for patients to share feedback for improvement initiatives.
National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers
Since 2010, City of Hope Chicago has been accredited by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC) — a distinction reserved for centers that voluntarily commit to providing the best possible care to patients with breast diseases.
Our hospital underwent a comprehensive evaluation and review of our performance and compliance with NAPBC standards, which includes advanced diagnostics, treatment plans, patient support and research.
American College of Surgeons Surgical Quality Partner
City of Hope Cancer Center Chicago is recognized by the American College of Surgeons as a Surgical Quality Partner, which highlights our commitment to delivering exceptional surgical care, reducing complications and improving patient outcomes. This designation was awarded to our Chicago-area hospital through our active participation in the CoC and NAPBC, two gold-standard programs that set rigorous quality standards for cancer treatment nationwide.
